Interview with Leo - the new operator of the Monaco Bar

Leo, you've been active in Vienna's red light and nightlife scene for many years. What made you decide to take over the Monaco Bar on Lindengasse?

"Honestly? I've always liked the Monaco Bar. It was never a noisy mass hangout, but a real bar with soul. When I heard it was open again, I didn't think twice. I've been in the business for over 20 years now - I've run clubs on the Gürtel, bars in the 2nd district and even worked in Germany for a few years. The Monaco simply has that old Viennese charm that you rarely find today. I didn't want to let it die, I wanted to breathe new life into it. That's why I bought it."

The Monaco Bar has been around for decades. What remains of the old charm and what have you, as an "old hand", completely redone or improved?

"The old charm remains 100 percent. The cozy furnishings, the dimmed lighting, the seating areas where you can have a proper chat - all that remains. That's always been the good thing about the Monaco.

What I have changed: The standards are now much higher. New furniture, better lighting, clean toilets (this is extremely important to me), a better selection of drinks and, above all, a team that is really friendly and professional. It used to be a bit tired sometimes, I admit that. Now we have drive again. The girls can feel it too - the atmosphere is much better."

How has the Viennese red light scene changed in the last 10-15 years from your point of view? What trends are you currently observing and how is the Monaco Bar positioned within them?

"There used to be a lot more going on, but everything was wilder. Today, guests are more demanding. Most of them don't want a cheap number, but real service, good company and discretion. Many come alone, are stressed from work and just want a nice evening without pressure.

That's why I don't do cheap prices or mass business. The Monaco remains a classic girls' bar - not too big, not too small. Quality instead of quantity. That goes down really well with regulars and new guests. The days of 'in, out, next' are over, at least for us."

Many guests today are looking for more than just a bar - they want atmosphere, discretion and genuine service. What is your personal recipe for making a guest feel at home from the very first moment and keep them coming back?

"Quite simply: respect and honesty.

When someone comes in, they are greeted in a friendly manner, not immediately hassled. They can have a drink in peace, look around, chat with the girls. No pressure, no 'you have to book something now'. People who feel comfortable are also happy to spend money - that's always been the case.

Plus absolute discretion. What happens in the Monaco stays in the Monaco. The guests appreciate that, especially those who are married or have a good reputation. And I personally go around a lot, talk to the guests and make sure that everything fits. That's my job as the boss."

When a guest visits the Monaco Bar for the first time - what do you want them to take home with them after the evening? And what are your biggest plans for the next 12 months with the bar?

"I want him to say: 'That was a really good evening Not just 'it was okay', but that he felt relaxed, well entertained and respected. Many people tell me later: 'Leo, you make me feel like a king, not like a customer That's exactly what I want.

For the next few months: We're expanding the VIP area a bit more, organizing a few small events (no big parties, more like closed rounds) and I want the Monaco to be considered one of the best addresses in the 7th and 8th districts again. In the long term, it should become an institution - like it used to be, only better.

If you come once, you should come again. That's my whole concept."
